Wedding cake Top Ten Q&A
WEDDING CAKE TOP TEN Q&A
As a wedding cake designer, I often get asked the same questions from newly engaged couples. If you’re curious about the wedding cake process, here are some common questions answered to help you out!
When Should We Book Our Wedding Cake?
You should book your cake as early as possible, especially for popular dates in the summer months and at weekends, which tend to fill up quickly. You don’t need to decide on your cake design straight away; securing your date is the priority.
How Much Will My Wedding Cake Cost?
The cost of a wedding cake depends on several factors, including the size, flavours, the complexity of the design, the amount of sugar florals and delivery distance. Each cake is made to your unique requirements, so prices can vary greatly. Check out my pricing guide for more details. I will work with you to stay as close to your budget as possible
What Size Of Cake Do I Need?
The design, number of portions required, and your budget will determine the size of your cake. As a rule, aim for around 75-80% of your guest list, as this will allow for guest drop-offs and non-cake eaters! There are many different shape and height configurations that can provide the necessary portions. If you prefer the look of a taller, larger design, dummy tiers can be incorporated to add extra height and complement your design without adding portions. Opting for dummy tiers instead of real cake tiers may lead to a slightly lower overall cost, however, most of a cake's cost is attributed to time spent on decoration, so the difference will be minimal.
When Should We Serve Our Wedding Cake?
Traditionally in Scotland, the cake is served during the evening reception alongside the evening buffet. But it’s your day, and you can have your cake served whenever you choose.
Can We Have Different Flavors?
Absolutely! You are not limited to just one flavour. However, keep in mind that as the tiers get smaller, there will be fewer servings of that flavour. Consider your guests' preferences, but don't compromise on your own.
Can We Taste The Cake?
Yes, taster boxes are available at certain times of the year, and you can order them in advance. For ordering information please see my website. Each box contains six portions of my most popular cake flavour combinations. If you choose not to order a tasting box, rest assured that you'll still be delighted with the flavours you decide upon for your cake. Over the years, I've perfected my recipes, ensuring that all the flavours are delicious and suited to all palates.
Do You Hire Out Cake Stands?
I provide a range of cake stands and separators for hire for a small fee, along with a security deposit. You will receive a refund of your deposit when you return the stand on the agreed date and time, provided it's returned in its original box and undamaged. Please ask for a copy of my stand hire brochure.
Many venues typically offer a standard silver cake stand, but the quality and condition of these stands can vary. I recommend requesting to see the cake stand provided by your venue to ensure that it aligns with your desired aesthetic and overall vision.
Do You Deliver Our Wedding Cake, and When?
I personally handle all deliveries due to the delicate nature of wedding cakes and sugar flowers. Most of the cakes I create require some degree of setup and decoration at the venue. On your wedding day, I will deliver your cake in the morning, and it will be fully set up by noon, unless otherwise instructed.
How Far Will You Travel for Delivery?
I primarily deliver to the central belt of Scotland; however, I can deliver further afield upon request. Delivery and setup charges apply, and they will be included in your cake quote.
Can You Copy This Cake Design from a Photo?
No, my cakes are bespoke designs tailored to each couple. During the design process I will create sketches and mood boards to capture your wedding style, refining them as necessary until you are happy with the design. However, please do share photographs of cakes that you like, as they serve as a good starting point and get the design process rolling.
